Governor Parnell Names 2014 “Education Season”

Alaska’s governor has set his sights on using technology and the Internet to improve education. During his January 22 state of the state address, Governor Parnell named 2014 the “education season” and announced a host of education initiatives, one of which will focus on using broadband and video conferencing in schools. The Alaska Digital Teaching Initiative, he promised, will give students access to high-quality teachers and instruction. The $5 million in funding will provide for technology that makes it possible for teachers to video conference with remote schools and teach in real time. Alaska to Get Gigabit Speed Internet Service

Gigabit speeds are coming to Alaska. Anchorage will soon be one of the few cities in the US to boast residential Internet speeds at one-gigabit per second. Alaskan Telecommunications company GCI recently announced it would bring the blazing fast Internet to the 49th state by 2015. This is not only exciting for people who enjoy streaming movies, but for web developers, Internet entrepreneurs, and public institutions like libraries and schools.
