Spring 2014 Hackathon another Great Success!

The Anchorage Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) hosted its fourth Hackathon recently, and organizers say there was a fabulous turnout! Below, Alicia Busick, Hackathon Committee Planning Member, talks about the results of the May 2014 Hackathon. The list of project ideas submitted was the longest yet, and pitches were being sent even after the Pitch Night. There was a strong presence from the AK Video Game group, which brought in the virtual reality headset for 3D gaming, Oculus Rift. The roller coaster demo mode viewed by attendees was a hit! Begich Speaks about His Work on Rural Broadband in D.C.

During a recent episode of The Broadband Beat with Shirley Bloomfield, hosted by NTCA, Senator Mark Begich (D-Alaska) talked about how important broadband is to rural parts of Alaska. Rural broadband connectivity is crucial for healthcare, education, commerce, and for social reasons, said Begich. “If you don’t have high-speed broadband connectivity in your community, you’re going to be left out.”  He went on to identify the need for more capacity given its current uses in telemedicine and distance learning, and the amount of potential for future applications.
